abstract = "The Paraiba do Sul basin has been used for agricultural activities
for more than four hundred years. Recently, reforestation
companies are increasing Eucalyptus plantations in this region
primarily for cellulose production. However, the processes of
modern monoculture, especially as practiced with the cultivation
of Eucalyptus, have led to questions about environmental and
socioeconomic issues. In the municipality of S{\~a}o Luis do
Paraitinga, S{\~a}o Paulo, these concerns resulted in a Public
Action that banned planting until environmental studies are
pursued. The methodology of this study involved the mapping of
Eucalyptus for the years 2008 and 2010 based on the analysis of TM
Landsat 5 imagery, using image enhancement and segmentation
techniques. Estimating the cultivation of Eucalyptus in both years
allowed verifying that Eucalytpus plantation increased from 2008
to 2010, therefore, since the Public Action was implemented.
Preliminary results showed that approximately 8% of the total area
of the municipality is currently occupied by Eucalyptus
                         plantations.",
